Food for Homeless and Needy
November 7th 2008 22:44
This time of year, we all think about the gifts we need or want to buy for our loved ones. Something we all need to think about, as well, is giving food to homeless shelters and the needy. This is a perfect time of year to do that, though any time of year is good.
Where I live there is a rescue mission that houses and feeds the homeless, as well as providing food baskets for those who can't afford to buy enough food. My family has recently started making monthly (or more frequent) contributions of food to this worthy cause.
We make a trip to Sam's Club and load up with staples - flour, sugar, beans, rice, etc. - and drop them off. Since we found out they also give out food baskets, we have been adding canned foods to the shopping list.
These types of organizations can be found everywhere. But even if you don't know of a place to donate food, most grocery stores have canned food drives at this time of year. If we remember the old saying, "It is better to give than to receive," we can know that we'll feel good about giving to such a worthy cause. Next time you're at the grocery store, pick up a few extra cans of vegetables and add to the food drive. Better yet, find out about an organization in your area that distributes food and make a special shopping trip to pick up some of the things they need.
Trust me, this kind of giving feels better and is much more in line with "the reason for the season" than simply exchanging gifts with friends and family. I may even ask everyone who normally gives me gifts to give to the rescue mission instead.
