That Time Of Year

August 11th 2009 04:31
It's that time --- the kids are about to go back to school, and I'm about to start planning homemade Christmas gifts for everyone on my list. Usually by this time of year, I already have ideas for most everyone, but I've been busy planning a wedding (it's finally over!) and getting a new website up and running (well, almost!).

So now I need to start planning. Oldest son and his new bride are getting a special printed scrapbook from their wedding, but they'll also need individual gifts. Mother-in-law will get her annual family calendar. (Even if I wanted to give her something else, I better include the calendar too - cuz she expects it EVERY YEAR!)

But what about everyone else???? Here are some ideas I've found online:

Moms Who Think.com has a Homemade Christmas Gifts page with lots of ideas. Homemade fleece blanket, kids craft basket, farmhand puppets, movie gift basket, homemade bath bombs, clay beads for jewelry making, candy cane bath salts, peppermint cocoa mix, TONS of coffee and tea flavored mixes, BBQ apron, refrigerator magnets, ornaments, potpourri, and pot holders. WOW - that's a lot of ideas.

The little kid stuff doesn't work for me - no little ones on my list. I think I'll try some of the coffee & tea mixes for my daughter-in-law (feels funny to say that - still used to "my son's girlfriend.") My daughter is fourteen - too old for kid stuff, but really still too young for adult stuff too. I didn't really see anything on that site I'd like to make for her. And I didn't see much for teenage boys, either. (I still have two of them at home!)

Well, at least I got an idea for the daughter-in-law. The coffee and tea mixes were listed under "gifts for mom," but they'll work for anyone. Here's what the directions say:

Coffee and Tea Mix Recipes

Mix any of the recipes and place in a pretty jar with a fabric decorated lid. Include a mug or tea cup.

To prepare the following coffee recipes: mix in food processor or blender until you have a fine powder.

For all the coffee recipes except the cafe' au lait, use 1 to 2 spoonfuls to one mug of hot water (to desired taste)

1 cup instant tea mix (unsweetened and no lemon)
2 cups dry tang powder
1 pkg. lemonade, unsweetened powder
1 cup sugar
1 TBS. nutmeg
1 TBS. allspice
1 TBS. cinnamon

Mix all ingredients together and store in air tight container. To use, place 1-2 rounded teaspoons of dry mix to 1 mug of hot water. (can use a shot of whiskey or spirits for hot toddy.)

Thanks, MomsWhoThink.Com, for the great ideas!
