Giving to the United Way
While I'm on the topic of charitible giving, I must mention some more well-known charities, and remind everyone to give - even if it's just a little - during the holiday season. Even if you don't celebrate Christmas, this is still a nice time to give to your favorite charity - give them a good start for the new year.
On thier website, the United Way offers a guide to giving. Here are some of the suggestions they offer:
1. Make an investment in your charity. If you view it as an investment in a worthwhile cause, you will benefit more from the experience of giving.
2. Research your charity to know it's legitimate. Be sure to research the organization to which you give. There are some frauds out there, but don't let that discourage you. Give to those you feel are worth the effort. Just do your best to be sure they are legitimate. Resources such as the Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance and GuideStar can help you to verify the legitimacy of an organization.
3. Know what tax benefits you might receive. I don't think that people give to charity soley for the tax benefit, but if it's there, know about it and take advantage of it. If you are able to receive a tax benefit from your giving, you'll just have more to give next year. Be sure you are aware of the requirements for claiming charitable gifts - Do you need a receipt? Is there an additional form you must file? etc.
4. What will you give? How much? Everyone, regardless of income level can give something. You may not be in a position to give financially, but you may be able to give of your time. Make your decision based on your personal situation.
5. Know where your gift goes. Keep informed of the organization's activities, so you can see your investment at work.
